Wulublolong Village in Solor Island, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has become a shining example of empowering women’s groups to achieve economic independence, as stated by the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA).
Minister Bintang Puspayoga emphasized the importance of continuous campaigns for empowerment, starting from the grassroots level. Recognizing that NTT is a major source of non-procedural migrant workers, she stressed the significance of empowering women in villages to prevent human trafficking and address economic hardships faced by families.
The women of Wulublolong Village serve as an inspiring model of empowerment. Despite the persuasive offers from labor brokers for higher-paying jobs outside the province or abroad, the women in this village have chosen to work within their own country, displaying remarkable resilience and determination.
Minister Puspayoga applauded the women’s efforts and encouraged them to inspire other women to join their movement. Recognizing the immense potential of women’s collective support, she emphasized that women comprise half of Indonesia’s population and can become an extraordinary economic force when empowered.
The minister also commended Du Anyam, a micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) that has played a significant role in empowering local women in East Flores. Founded in 2015, Du Anyam focuses on enhancing the welfare of women through handicrafts.
Puspayoga praised Du Anyam for training women to produce high-quality woven products and helping them find market opportunities, ensuring reasonable prices for their products. The organization aims to address major socio-economic issues in East Flores, enabling women to achieve financial independence and lead prosperous lives.
Du Anyam founder Hanna Keraf emphasized their commitment to empowering women in NTT and supporting their journey towards independence. By utilizing the natural resources available, weaving has transitioned from a spare-time activity to a main job that improves the weavers’ welfare. Many women engage in weaving while waiting for patients at the health center or picking up their children from school. Keraf expressed appreciation for the dedication and skill of the weaver women in Wulublolong Village.
