Dr. Nasira Khatoon has made history as she became the first woman acting vice-chancellor of Karachi University. After the former VC, Dr. Khalid Iraqi, was ousted in accordance with a Sindh High Court ruling, the Sindh government confirmed Nasira Khatoon’s appointment as KU’s acting VC under an interim arrangement. The newly appointed acting VC is one of the seniors most professors at university.
Dr. Khatoon completed her Ph.D. in parasitology from Karachi University’s Department of Zoology in 1994, and her area of expertise is clinical and veterinary parasitology and pathology, as well as fish pathology. The professor earned her MSc degree with distinction from the department of zoology in 1986 and her BSc degree with distinction from APWA College for Women in 1983. From October 25, 2019, to November 3, 2020, she was the chairperson of the Department of Zoology.
Furthermore, she joined the zoology department as a professor on November 11, 2005, after serving as an associate professor from January 1, 2001, to November 10, 2005, and as an assistant professor from March 28, 1994, to December 31, 2000. Seven students have earned their Ph.D. degrees and three students have earned their MPhil degrees under her guidance till now. Moreover, she was the acting dean of the faculty of engineering as well as the dean of the faculty of science.
In addition to this, Dr. Khatoon had also participated in numerous international symposia, seminars, and courses around the world, and had finished five research funding projects between 1996 and 2000. The KU acting vice-chancellor is also a co-writer of 35 books while jointly submitting 190 research publications in international and national journals.
