Justice Ayesha Malik Sworn in as First Female Supreme Court Judge of Pakistan

Justice Ayesha Malik became successful in breaking the glass ceiling as she became the first female supreme court judge of Pakistan. The oath ceremony has taken place inside the Supreme Court building on Monday. Justice Ayesha was proclaimed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed as the first female supreme court judge of Pakistan.

Furthermore, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, who has been nominated as Pakistan’s next top judge, and other Supreme Court judges were also in attendance. During the occasion, CJP Ahmed stated that no one can take credit for Justice Ayesha’s appointment as a Supreme Court judge. He went on to say that Justice Ayesha was appointed based on her qualifications.

This is a historic moment as Justice Ayesha Malik of the Lahore High Court was sworn in as a Supreme Court Judge for the first time in the 74-years history of Pakistan. Her appointment has signaled many more positive decisions to promote women’s empowerment. Twitter has been flooded with congratulations tweets after her appointment.

Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari also took to Twitter to applaud Justice Ayesha’s appointment. Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz stated that the appointment of Justice Ayesha as the first female apex court judge is a historic moment for the women of Pakistan.

On Thursday, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) confirmed Justice Ayesha Malik’s candidacy for appointment as a Supreme Court judge by a vote of five to four. On Friday, Justice Ayesha was promoted to the status of justice of the Supreme Court. The final clearance for Justice Ayesha Malik’s appointment as an SC judge had been given to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges, after which the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Thursday confirmed her candidacy for appointment as an SC judge by a vote of five to four.
