Keechant Sewel has made history as she is going to serve as commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD). Sewell is going to be the first Black woman to take the position of NYPD’s top cop. She will be the first black female to head the nation’s largest police force. Keechant Sewell is an experienced crime fighter.
She has earlier worked as the Nassau County chief of detectives since Sept. 2020, where she leads a staff of about 350 people. She is the best choice to manage the 35,000 officers of NYPD. Sewell hailed from Queens. The news of her historic appointment comes after it was disclosed that current NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea and the department’s second in command, First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Tucker, will complete their full terms and retire at the end of the year.
She is a 22-year police veteran in Nassau County, and everyone liked her in her department. Sewell has had numerous leadership posts that range from leading major cases to hostage negotiation. Adams believed that Sewell has the experience and emotional intelligence to provide both the safety and justice New Yorkers need and deserve.
Furthermore, Adam added that Chief Sewell will wake up every day laser-focused on keeping New Yorkers safe and bettering their city, and it’s an honor to have her at the helm of the NYPD. In addition, Sewell knocked out multiple candidates, including former Seattle top cop Carmen Best, who stated that she was “grateful to have been a finalist and will continue to focus on mapping out the future of public safety,” before commending Sewell.
After her nomination, Sewell revealed that she was also conscious of the extraordinary nature of her nomination. She added that she is happy to become the city’s first female police commissioner. Sewell is very grateful to even be taken into consideration for this, and it’s a tremendous opportunity.
