The ousted leader of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained for more than four months after a military coup in the country. The protest has started in the country since the military coup has removed Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in February. More than 850 people have lost their lives due to the emerging protest after the military coup.
Suu Kyi is all set to face trial on Monday on charges of violating coronavirus rules while lobbying for the election she won last November and also for ownership of the unauthorized walkie-talkies. Her lawyer disclosed that her first trial is anticipated to run till the end of July. In addition to this, Burmese politician has also faced various other charges involving the intention to instigate, violating the official secrets act and accusations for taking $600,000 and 11.4 kg worth of gold from Yangon’s former chief minister.
Aung’s lawyers have allowed meeting with her just twice since she was placed under house arrest. Hearings for the case are set to commence every Monday. It has been disclosed that if she charges against her will be proved Aung San Suu Kyu will face more than a ten-year period in jail.
International communities are condemning the military coup and are demanding the immediate release of Myanmar’s leader and her political partner. Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director, Human Rights Watch, disclosed that the accusations on Suu Kyi “are false and politically driven” and “should be dropped, resulting in her instant and unrestricted freedom.”
Moreover, the Military is of the view that they have detained Aung San Suu and her partners due to the voting fraud through which they have won the November election. But this accusation of the military has faced criticism from the international community.
