Zimbabwean First Lady Demands Affordable Loans for Women-Led Enterprises

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa has been striving for the betterment of women. She has been serving as the First Lady of Zimbabwe since November 2017, as the wife of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. First Lady requested financial institutions to provide cheap and affordable loans to women-led businesses.

The First Lady has been endeavoring for women’s empowerment. She stated that though in Zimbabwe and in other countries all over the globe there are laws that ask for gender parity in the construction sector despite that women are still facing the gender disparity in the construction sector.

The First Lady disclosed that investors all around the globe are looking for countries that have good infrastructure and have strong policies to remove gender discrimination. Investors are confident to get more by working with women as their nature of motherhood. First Lady disclosed that Section 56 of the Zimbabwean Constitution offers a framework for the security and promotion of the rights of women and the girl child in Zimbabwe.

The construction sector is an important sector for Zimbabwe. The construction sector has the duty to build schools, hospitals, roads, dams, airports, and other infrastructure and social facilities that are necessary for economic activity to take place. She also disclosed that the construction industry is also the major contributor to the GDP of the country.

Furthermore, First Lady stated that Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association has more than 3,000 members across the whole country and that women members reached 38. This figure shows that women’s percentage in the sector is around 1 percent. She said that she is relieved that the construction sector has started measures to overcome this issue.
