Meet the First Woman of Color in the Welsh Parliament

Natasha Asghar has made history as she became the first woman of color in the Welsh Parliament. Though her parents involved in politics but she herself strives to reach the Welsh Parliament. Her father was an MS, and her mother was a mayoress. Natasha Asghar is a Welsh Conservative Party politician who embodies South Wales East in the Senedd since the 2021 Senedd election.

The father of Natasha, Mohammad Asghar, also served in the same electorate as Natasha until his death in 2020. Natasha is of Pakistani heritage. She is the first female ethnic minority member of the Senedd. Ms. Asghar was born in Newport.

Her father and mother both were involved in politics, but they never forced her to pursue their path. She herself decided to study politics at the University. Natasha disclosed that her mother wants her to study law or medicine. She revealed that when she was about to join university her father asked her what she wanted to study and what is her choice.

Natasha said that she liked to talk. She said that one thing about which her teachers scolded her is that she talks too much. Her ability to talk and her knowledge of working with Senedd members helped her to choose the path of politics.

Before joining politics, she worked for four years as a banker, and then she worked as a radio and TV presenter for 10 years. When she worked in the bank, Ms. Asghar emerged as the Plaid Cymru candidate for the 2007 National Assembly for Wales election in Blaenau Gwent and for the Wales seat in the 2009 European elections.

The thing which encouraged her to join politics other than her family is the protest against the Iraq War in the early 2000s. She disclosed that COVID has destroyed everything and it’s not anyone’s mistake, but it upset her because many opportunities which she got other people unable to get.
