Shamshad Akhtar who is the ex-governor of the State Bank of Pakistan has made history as she became the first female chairperson of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). In the 73-year of history of PSX, Shamshad Akhtar became the first one to appoint to this position. In the previous month, she was chosen as the independent director of the board but now she has been appointed as the chairperson of PSX.
Pakistan Stock Exchange has released a statement and stated that the former governor of SBP is the legend of the financial markets of Pakistan. Ms. Shamshad has worked as the governor of the SBP for three years. She has performed various extraordinary functions such as she performed the streamlining process of banks in East Asian economies and connected on a regular basis with the Bank of International Settlement on Basel Standards.
Furthermore, she also served for 10 years World Bank prior to joining the ADB in 1990. She has held the main position there and also supervised the operations of banks in a number of states. She was the ADB’s specialist on South East Asian economies.
Ms. Shamshad is grateful and is committed to serve PSX and join SECP endeavors. PSX CEO Farrukh Khan, while welcoming her, stated: “We are especially thrilled and pleased to have somebody of the talent of Dr. Akhtar as the chairperson of PSX.”
The seven shareholder directors were nominated at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on April 19 after the tenure of the earlier board of directors terminated. The three independent directors were chosen on April 29.
