13-year old Iranian girl Romina Ashrafi was brutally killed by her father in an honor killing. Romina was sleeping when her father beheaded her with a sickle in her home in Hovigh, Talesh County as a form of punishment.
It has been revealed that she had fallen in love with an older man and decided to run away with him. So her father murdered her for the sake of so-called honor.
Romina initially ran away with a 35-year old man after her father expressed her anger at their plan to get married. Families of man and Romina had contacted officials and started a search for them. When they found them they took the Romina to her home.
Despite the fear of Romina that she would be in danger at her home officials handed her back to her family as demanded by Islamic Republic law.
After murdering the Romina her father turned himself in to police with the murder weapon in his hand. District governor Kazem Razmi stated that the police started the investigation.
The Vice President for Women’s Affairs Masoumeh Ebtekar also gave special orders to investigate the murder of Romina.
Romina’s father will escape the death sentence as he was her guardian. According to the Islamic Penal codes rules, he is exempt from ‘qisas’, or ‘retaliation in kind’. According to shariah law, only direct relatives of victims are allowed to demand execution.
But unfortunately in most cases, the honor killings go unpunished since the families are not demanding the execution of another family member.
Every year in Iran many women and girls were killed by their male relatives for honor but Romina was brutally murdered which shocked the whole country.
