Masoumeh Ebtekar, vice president of Iran has been diagnosed with coronavirus.
She is currently the vice-president for women and family affairs. She is better known internationally as the English-language spokeswoman “Mary” for the 1979 hostage-takers who seized the US embassy in Tehran.
The local owned state newspaper revealed the news on Twitter. Iran has the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths other than China. At least 26 people have died and there have been 254 confirmed cases of the virus, including 106 new infections.
Iran has banned Chinese citizens from entering the country. Authorities in Iran also canceled the Friday prayers.
Masoumeh Ebtekar is a third senior Iranian official who is infected by the virus. Iranian cleric & historian Hadi Khosroshahi has also died at 81 as a result of Coronavirus.
