Two women in Indonesia have been arrested for spreading lies about coronavirus. The women separately posted a rumor on their social media accounts. Post says that a local resident was infected by the virus and undergoing treatment.
The women were taken into custody in Balikpapan. The police said that they were arrested for allegedly spreading misinformed people online about the deadly virus, they also warned that dozen of false news was being rapidly shared by the millions of internet users in the country.
Police spokesman Ade Yaya Suryana told: “They posted a hoax on their Facebook account that a Balikpapan resident has been diagnosed with coronavirus. They were spreading lies.”
He further continued: “The women, one is a farmer and the other a maid could face up to three years in prison if convicted under laws banning the spread of misinformation.”
Indonesia has not yet reported a confirmed case of the virus. The communication ministry warned that at least 50 online hoaxes are spotted about the virus.
