23-year old Tennis sensation Ash Barty has been named as the Young Australian of the year. Barty has been an inspiration for others as she climbed the ranks to become the world’s number one women’s singles player.
Ashleigh has won the national prize as she struggles to become Australia’s first Open singles champion since 1978.
Ash is working as the National Indigenous tennis ambassador for Tennis Australia. She is ranked No. 1 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association and is the second Australian WTA singles No. 1.
Barty was shocked when she received the award. She said: “Thank you, I’m so glad it says young. All of the values that I’ve lived by and try to live by every single day, regardless of whether it’s in sport. It all comes from mum and dad.
“It’s about being humble and respectful. And giving it a break trying to be the best you can be, and that’s all you can ask of yourself,” she added.
In her acceptance speech, she urged young people to be their true selves. She is currently battling in the Australian Open to be an Open singles champion.
