The 20th International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will be observed worldwide on November 25. The theme for 2019 is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’.
Starting from November 25, a 16-day worldwide activism campaign against gender-based violence will begin till December 10. The day is observed every year to raise awareness on the fact that women are subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence around the world.
The aim is to eradicate all types of violence against women and girls by raising awareness of this issue. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread human rights violations in our world today.
November 25 is the UN’s international day to end violence against women. The day marks the 1960s murder of the ‘Mirabel sisters’ in the Dominican Republic. They stood up to dictatorship and were killed for their activism. Today 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence.
More than 70% of trafficking victims are women. Three-quarters of them are sexually exploited. This year thousand around the world marched against domestic violence. The UN says that they are committed to end violence against women but there’s still a long way to go.
