Reproduction is a natural phenomenon and everyone wants to be fit in it. But when it comes to have offspring’s the first thought is about women. It is estimated that globally 60-80 million couples suffer from infertility annually. There are a lot of things associated with it. The one common factor of now a days is obesity. The unwanted layers of fats are playing an important role in reproductive system.
On the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) regional conference of the Middle East and Africa, Dr Nazareth an obstetrician and gynecologist and secretary general of the Emirates Medical Association spoke at press conference stating that Women in the UAE should focus on maintaining a healthier lifestyle to improve their reproductive health since obesity is among the top health issues that affect pregnancy and child birth.
This conference stating health issues remained for three days, starting on Wednesday. It has over 80 speakers who talked about the main issues related to women’s reproduction health. Dr Nazareth stated that the UAE has the major problem of obesity among women which is leading to infertility. On average most women has Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) over 30 which is due to many reasons. That could be sedentary lifestyle, work stress or improper eating habits. These trigger several factors such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance that contribute to infertility.
But Obesity is a problem being faced worldwide. And it’s important for women to know about their body and health. Of which some of weight gain issues that results in infertility are stated below.
What fertility issues are caused by excessive weight gain?
• Irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles
• Increased risk of infertility
• Less success with fertility treatments
• Increased risk of miscarriage.
• Obesity also increases the risks of high blood pressure and diabetes during the pregnancy.
Obesity itself has related issues which are being triggered by other factors as well. Such other factors that impact women’s reproductive health include Vitamin D deficiency, endometriosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Though UAE population has plentiful sunshine but still major population suffers from the insufficiency of vitamin D. The active form of Vitamin D calcitriol not just controls the estrogen content in a woman, but many other genes that are caught up in embryo implantation.
Vitamin D during pregnancy adds its supplementation to egg cell maturation in women affected by PCOS. It is also required to fight against infections. Women who are Vitamin D deficient can face hormonal imbalance making them prone to miscarriage. Lack of vitamin D can also result in complications, such as gestational hypertension and diabetes,
The doctors also noted that women needed to be constantly updated and educated on the health concerns as they don’t know about the basic requirements as well. Because these things on later stage leads to the drastic results. Stressing that women need constant reminders with regards to diet and exercise to counter the prevalent obesity problem. Such a problem don’t let reproductive system work properly and women becomes worried of it.
Follow these steps to reduce your weight:
- Go for a balanced diet: Eat 3 meals in a day and include fruits and vegetables in your diet
- Do regular physical exercise and relaxation exercise
- Drink sufficient water
- Complete your 6 to 8 hours of sleep
- Reduce your intake of food or drinks that contain high level of sugar and fat
- Quit smoking and drinking
- Twice a day, go for brisk walking for 30 minutes
There is a need of awareness campaigns to educate women on how to avoid illness. Most women do not understand or realize the constant repercussions of daily stress of work, job and family life, obesity which is due to improper life style and can have a huge toll on a normal healthy individual.
